Review of Music for Found Objects

Percussionist Jesse Stewart regularly steps out from under his musician’s hat to don that of a visual or performance artist—both of which media inform his music. Many of the objects that Stewart is playing on this CD were also part of a gallery exhibition. Stewart is not the first to composer to create music for found objects, but he certainly brings a fresh approach to the performance. Playing such objects as canoe paddles, sea shells, saw blades, steel pipes, and bowls, Stewart veers away from barraging us with the obvious, exploring instead the rich tones, harmonics, and subtleties of each object. He thus invites us into a unique realm discovered through many hours of exploration. Performing with finesse and sensitivity, Stewart quietly opens the door for us to a limitless world of delicate sonic beauty.
